Laser Hair Removal: Is It Right For You?

Some people feel great about their body hair, they embrace it. At the end of the day, it’s only natural, and that’s fine. If you, however, love your skin feeling as smooth as silk and hydrated, you’ll love the benefits of Laser Hair Removal.

There is nothing more annoying than spiky, new hair growth in your armpits, legs and bikini line. The one that creeps back a few days after you’ve waxed and, unless you don’t mind the dark shadow effect, gives you no other option other than shaving every other day, leaving your skin sore, covered in red bumps, and prone to hair ingrowth. Yuck!

And then it’s the time factor. How many hours a week do you dedicate to keeping your body hair free? How many times have you had to cover up because you’ve run out of time or have simply forgotten to book your next wax appointment in the salon?

Shaving, threading and waxing are a quick fix to hairless skin, but in the long run, they can be pricey and tiring. Laser Hair Removal offers you a permanent solution to get rid of your hair for good, giving you back the velvety texture of a baby’s skin. Although it comes with a higher price tag than the traditional waxing or threading, it is a wise investment as, eventually, it will save you hundreds of pounds in shaving or waxing products and lots and lots of time.

To give you an overview of the many benefits to Laser Hair Removal, we’ve put together this comprehensive guide on how it works and the reasons why you should consider investing in it.

What is laser hair removal and how does laser work?

Laser hair removal uses light technology to remove unwanted hair. A laser emits and directs a light to the pigment of the hair, which absorbs it, heating up and as a result, destroying the hair follicle and disrupting hair growth.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Laser hair removal is a safe cosmetic procedure and currently, there is no evidence that it can cause long-term health risks. Advances in laser technology mean that laser hair removal doesn’t have to be painful either, especially when using a diode laser.

We will always suggest and carry out a patch test in a small area for your safety to ensure you don’t have a skin reaction to the treatment.

There are different types of laser treatment to suit skin’s types. At ERA, we have three different types of laser: Diode, ND:YAG and Alexandrite, which means we can treat all shades of skin from very light to very dark.

Your aesthetic clinic shall be able to recommend which one is right for you, depending on your skin colour and type of hair. The treatment is not recommended if you are taking certain medications, which your therapist will discuss with you, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

In which areas can you have laser?

The most common areas for laser hair removal are legs, underarms and bikini line, including: Brazilian and Hollywood. You can also have it on your face: upper lip, side burns, chin, and eyebrows, and other areas such as: shoulders, lower back, arms, buttocks line, inner thighs and abdominal line.

How many treatments do you need and how often shall you have them?

You will need several sessions to ensure your hair growth is disrupted. The number of treatments will depend on your type of hair and skin and also the area you are treating. On average, we recommend that you have between 6 and 8 sessions, every 6 to 8 weeks.

After completing your treatment, your treated area will be hair-free. Depending on your hair and skin type, top up treatments may be required in the future but these should be minimal.

When should you start it?

As the whole treatment takes an average of 10 months, we recommend you start having your sessions in the autumn and winter months. This will guarantee you smooth and silky skin for the summer, although you should start to notice that the hair grows back thinner and more slowly after a few sessions

Is there any downtime after the treatment?

You can return to your normal activities after your laser hair removal session. You should, however, avoid getting in contact with extreme heat conditions, such as going to the sauna or steam room and direct sunlight, protecting your skin with an appropriate sunscreen.

You can shave your hair in between sessions, but should avoid waxing, threading or plucking.

What additional benefits do you get?

Apart from enjoying a hair-free body, laser hair removal comes with other great benefits. They prevent the appearance of ingrown hairs, which can sometimes lead to boils and abscesses, and they can also save you from having shaving rashes or skin irritations appearing from the constant use of other hair removal procedures. On top, you can completely erase hair removal from your beauty regime. Just imagine how much valuable time and money you will be saving.

If you love the idea of being groomed to perfection and are ready to ditch the wax or the razor, laser hair removal is certainly for you.
