IPL Facial Rejuvenation

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology uses a broad-spectrum light which penetrates the skin to target some of the most common skin concerns:

  • Pigmentation: brown patches on the skin causes by sun damage or ageing.
  • Melasma: caused by sun damage or hormone related.
  • Broken capillaries: caused by sun damage or facial ageing.
  • Rosacea: caused by hormonal factors.

IPL also has a rejuvenating effect on the skin, helping to even out skin tone, brighten the skin and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. This treatment is often commonly referred to as IPL Photorejuvenation or Photofacial and is available at ERA Skin & Laser Clinic in Oxfordshire, serving Thame, Aylesbury, Oxford.

How It Works

Removing the signs of sun damage and premature ageing with Photorejuvenation via IPL restores the natural shine and vibrancy of your skin, turning back the clock and taking years off your appearance.

The technology works by emitting high-intensity pulses of broadband light deep into the skin without harming the surface area. A difference can be seen after only one session, monthly treatments are recommended to maintain results.

FAQ's

What areas of the skin can be treated?

Photorejuvenation is a treatment that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a non-laser light source, to fix pigmentation issues, like sun damage, brown spots, and freckles, and vascular abnormalities such as redness, broken capillaries, spider veins, and rosacea.

IPL treatment for skin is also effective for hand rejuvenation, regular treatment improves skin condition and plumpness, leading to a more youthful appearance.

IPL treatments can be combined with our Hydrafacial [LINK] treatment and/or radiofrequency skin tightening to further improve skin health, lift and tighten sagging skin.

Will I need a consultation for IPL?

Before any treatment can take place, you will need to book in for a consultation and patch test. This is important to ensure you are suitable for treatment and that your skin will tolerate the IPL treatment without a reaction.

Is IPL safe?

Skin reactions are very rare, but with any laser or IPL treatment your safety is important. Your treatment can start 48 hours after your patch test.

What conditions are contraindicated for IPL?

If you have a suntan, it is best to wait until your tan has faded before starting IPL photorejuvenation treatment. This is because the light is attracted to the colour or pigment in your skin which can lead to burns.

We are not able to treat all skin colours using the IPL system for the same reason, especially darker skin types. Although, please note that we have several medical grade lasers at our clinic in Thame meaning we have solutions for treating all skin colours, from very fair to very dark, and should be able to offer treatment for your specific skin concerns.

You should not have IPL treatment when you are pregnant.

What can I expect during treatment?

Your skin therapist will assess your skin and discuss your treatment goals. At your first session you will be taken to our specialist treatment room. You will be given dark eye protectors to wear which are designed to ensure the light from the IPL does not penetrate your eye to ensure your safety. Cooling gel will be applied to your face and the treatment commenced. You can expect to feel warmth from the IPL light. If you have opted to include radiofrequency skin lifting within your treatment, you will feel slightly more heat in circular movements which is like a hot stone massage.

How long does IPL Photorejuvenation take?

IPL treatments usually take 30-90 minutes depending on the area we are treating, and the skin concern we are addressing.

How many treatment sessions are recommended?

The number of treatment sessions required to achieve photorejuvenation for skin tightening or to correct pigmentation concerns will vary and will be discussed during your consultation.

On average, you can expect a recommendation of 3-6 sessions, with each spaced 4 weeks apart.

Does IPL hurt?

Treatment is comfortable and our clients love the results.

Is there downtime after IPL?

Downtime is minimal with IPL treatment, but you can expect to look a little red, or sunburnt-like for a few days. Aftercare advice will be provided.

When will I see results?

You will start to see visible results up to a week after a treatment session as the redness subsides and your skin recovers. Optimal results will establish after 3-6 months post your treatment programme as your body naturally renews your skin cells with healthier, unpigmented tissue.

How long does IPL last?

The result of IPL treatment is best maintained annually with a repeat treatment session. Depending on your lifestyle and sun avoidance, results can be long-lasting, but additional skin damage through ageing and sun exposure are difficult to avoid completely.
